We have seen snipe and plan to add a bird hide so that they can be observed without being disturbed. We are developing this field as a nature area, encouraging a wild flower meadow and increasing the biodiversity in the coming years. For 3 days we place a bat monitor in our orchard area which records all the different species of bat in the area. More details of this exciting project can be found on the website http://devonbatproject.org/ The photo above shows the bat boxes we installed on the wall of the house, in March 2018. Thanks to the A Rocha ‘Partners in Action’ scheme we were able to add an additional bat box and we can recommend to visitors the best places to see bats in our fields. In 2025 the bat monitor detected eight different species of bat, including the common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, noctule, brown long eared bat, serotine, whiskered bat, brandt’s bat and daubenton’s bat. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59539c19197aeada916cdedd/1562943686345-XJX8VNLFMKHPBTH8Y79G/IMG_3897.JPG Conservation Projects The gardens and grounds are constantly evolving, as we add more plants to attract bees, butterflies and other insect. We introduced our first bee hive in April 2019 and enjoy our ongoing beekeeping experience. Each year we observe many different species of butterfly, moth, damselfly and dragonfly across the meadow. Since 2019 we have experimented with different mowing regimes, all aiming to encourage the wild flowers in the meadow field. In 2021 we attended several webinars run by Moor Meadows, to learn more about ‘Conservation Grazing’ and we now use our sheep to manage the meadows. Shropshire sheep are a lowland breed which are said to be ideal for use in orchards. We have two Dorset Poll crossed with Suffolk, large sheep with good fleeces too. Our latest additions are four Merino crossed with Jacob’s sheep - brown in colour and much smaller than our other sheep. The Cream Legbar and Araucana lay blue eggs. Most of the time they are kept safely in their run, but for a special treat they are allowed to look for slugs in the flower borders. This photo shows the Araucana chicks that we hatched in 2025. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59539c19197aeada916cdedd/1610728848193-3MA7HS0QP9LSD7X3MXK7/Marsh+Tit+Jan+2021.jpg Our Animals - Wild birds We have seen an amazing number of birds in our grounds including: blackbird, robin, wren, chaffinch, bullfinch, jackdaw, sparrow, thrush, nuthatch, great tit, blue tit, coal tit, buzzard, starling, dunnock, long tailed tit, goldcrest, crow, rook, greater spotted woodpecker, marsh tit, lapwing, chiff chaff, snipe, goldfinch, heron, greenfinch, collared dove, grey partridge, small owl, barn owl, tawny owl, sparrowhawk. The marsh tit (pictured on right) is on the RSPB Red List, indicating that its numbers have declined dramatically in the past forty years. Just one of the species we are supporting as part of our ‘Partners in Action’ work with A Rocha UK (the conservation charity). We see fieldfare feeding off our fallen apples most winters, another bird on the Red List. In November 2023 & 2025 we were able to join with other ‘Partners in Action’ at the annual retreat. In 2024 and 2025 we have spotted a pair of red kites.
